End of Year Letter 2020
End of Year Letter 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Now that our schools have been closed through the end of the school year, we want to take this opportunity to update you moving forward.  This is not the way we envisioned the 2020 school year would end.  We are saddened that the spring activities and celebrations have been cut short.   First, we want to thank all the Potomac staff for their dedication and service to your children.  We have been amazed at the remote learning lessons,  food preparation, interactive activities, and genuine concern for the wellbeing of their students.  This has not been easy for them and definitely not what they were trained to do.

Second, we have extreme appreciation for the parents, grandparents, and other relatives that had to step up and assist their children with remote learning.  We know it has been a frustrating and stressful experience taking on this added responsibility.   Our goal for remote learning was not to make you a teacher, but provide opportunities for your child to extend what they were learning and provide practice in areas to keep their minds active.   Rest assured, your child will benefit from the work they completed.

Several parents have asked about grading.  As you are aware the Governor and State Board of Education established that grading is only to be used to monitor progress and can not be used against the student.  Remote learning has changed many things.  Educational progress during this time is highly individual and can not be compared to a letter grade that is established for a group of students.  During the fourth nine week period there will be no letter grades posted on the report cards.   Teachers have maintained individual progress for their students.  A year end conference will be offered to parents and students to review their progress.  We appreciate your understanding as we conclude the year.  Your child will benefit from this work and their hard work does not go unnoticed.

As the end of the year is getting closer we wanted to let you know the schedule we will be following.

  • May 4 - 8 - Last week for any remote learning

  • May 7 - Student pickup of all supplies  *More information will go out this weekend about this.

  • May 8 - Students’ last day

  • May 11 - 15 - Teachers will be reaching out to parents during this time to go over student progress.

  • We will continue to have food distribution on  May 4, May 11, and May 18.   After that lunches will end.

The end of year is a time of celebration and promotion.  We want to celebrate the accomplishment that our students have made throughout the year.  Many of our students have physically grown and matured into young men and women.  Relationships with teachers and friends have grown stronger.   We celebrate all of these!   We  will be celebrating in some way with our Eighth graders as they finish one step in their education and move on to a new adventure.   No one expected this life changing event, but we will get through it.   We want to say thanks to everyone in the Potomac Community for their support of your school and look forward to August when we can all meet in person again.
